Sunday, February 18, 2024 The First Sunday of Lent

This month is not only the month the season of Lent begins, it is also Black History month. Are you doing something to observe this month: reading a book, taking part in a webinar or another event? There are some items on the United Church website, united-church.ca, if you would like to take a look.

Hymn   Take Time to be Holy #672VU

Scripture Lessons:      Genesis 9:8-17

                                    Psalm 25 p.752VU

                                    Mark 1:9-15

Meditation

Prayer:  Through the season of Lent, teach us, O God.  Teach us to walk in your ways, the way shown to us by Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus the Christ, even though it may lead us to the cross. Teach us to be faithful, as he was faithful, as you are faithful, so we call upon you:
When we are tempted, help us to find strength.
When we are discouraged, fill us with hope.
When we are led astray, help us to find the right paths.
When we are ashamed, assure us of your grace and love.
Unite us through your Holy Spirit that we may serve you with our sisters and brothers in Christ.
We give you thanks, O God, that you hear and answer our prayers and that you are faithful to your promises. Let this season of Lent teach us how to be your faithful people, now and always. Amen.

Sunday, February 11, 2024 Transfiguration Sunday

Hymn       God Reveal Your Presence #391 VU

Scripture Lessons:       II Corinthians 4:3-6

                                     Psalm 50:1-6 p. 775VU

                                     Mark 9:2-9

Message

Prayer:  Holy and loving God, whose nature and ways are far beyond our understanding, we thank you the gift of your Son, Jesus, who lets us see your face in his, who shows us your love in his actions, your grace in his way of being. In him too, O God, we see ourselves as you would have us be and as your power is able to make us. Make us more like him, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer….

Lord, we often find ourselves weary, tired out by a load of care, a heap of responsibility and concern. We hunger and thirst, and often fail to eat and drink at the table you have prepared for us. Lord, we are here now and we ask you grant us a glimpse of your glory, fill us with your spirit, refresh us and make us new. Lord, hear our prayer…..

Loving God, we pray that your glory may fill your church and give to your people everywhere the energy to shine wherever there is darkness, dignity, persecution, or despair. Lord, hear our prayer….

Give us all, O God, a greater love of your holiness, a greater delight in your mystery, and a greater joy in seeking your presence. We ask it through Christ Jesus, who revealed your will to us and who taught us to pray to you as one family. Amen. ( a prayer written by John Maynard, shared on Richard Fairchild’s Kir-shalom website and on the re:Worship website as well.)

Sunday, February 4, 2024 The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

February 2nd is not just Groundhog Day but it also known as Candlemas or the Presentation of Jesus, when we remember the story from the gospel of Luke when Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple and met Simeon and Anna there. Candlemas is often observed by lighting candles as a sign of our welcome to Jesus, the Light of the World. So, whether the ground hog sees his shadow or not, we know there is light in the world! Let’s rejoice! 🕯️

Hymn.   When Morning Gilds the Skies #339VU

Prayer:  Maker of all that is, heaven and earth, known and unknown, birth and death and the sense of eternity: Giver of life, liver in life:  Words for you lift my spirit. Yet I am so small, my needs consume me.
Hold my hand, encourage me to dance your dance to laugh with joy, surpassing all trouble and failure.
Remind me of your beauty:  speechless  wonder    goodness:  light and darkness making light.
Open to me your giving this day. Let me receive and trust myself into your hands. Amen. ( a prayer for the beginning of the day by the Rev. Neil Whitehouse and printed in Gathering ACE 2011-2.)

Scripture Lessons:       Isaiah 40:21-31

                                     Psalm 147:1-11 p.869VU pt 1

                                     Mark 1:29-39

Message

Prayer: God, in the midst, come close to us, and help us come close to you, as, for a fraction of time, we step back from the activities of the day.
May we treasure such moments with you. Moments when we can bring to you the things we are doing, and find new meaning for them, and new strength for doing them.
And moments for recalling how we are meeting you already, in the stuff of daily living and engagement, when faith is tested and compassion is translated into action.
So, if as the day goes on, we forget you, do not forget us, O God. Amen. (a prayer from the Iona Community’s Iona Abbey Worship Book.)

Scripture Lessons:       I Corinthians 8:1-13

                                     Psalm 111 p.833VU

                                     Mark 1:21-28

Message

Prayer:  O Jesus Christ, when I read the gospel stories I am touched by your healing power. You healed sick bodies to be sure, but you did so much more. You healed the spirit and the deep inner mind. Most of all I am touched by your actions off acceptance that spoke healing into those who lived on the margins of life— shoved aside by the strong and the powerful.
Speak your healing into me, O Lord— body and mind and soul. Most of all, heal my sense of worthlessness. My head tells me that I am of infinite value to you but my heart cannot believe it. Heal my heart, Jesus, heal my heart. Amen. ( a prayer written by by Richard Foster and printed in Prayers from the Heart)

Many thanks to the Nakonhaka Regional Council who has provided copies of the Mohawk Bible to the Howick and Ormstown congregations. It allows us to honour the accomplishment of Harvey Gabriel, Satewas, in completing this translation over many years (decades) and also to acknowledge that we share this land with the Kanienkehaka (Mohawk) people.

Hymn.      Jesus Calls Us #562VU

Message

Prayer:  Lord, have mercy on us and heal our souls, for we have sinned against you and against our sisters and brothers.
Renew the communion among Christians, healing their divisions, so that the world may believe in your love, Lord we pray.
For justice and peace in our society, for the overcoming barriers of fear, resentment, and distrust, Lord we pray.
For those who suffer want and anxiety through lack of work, Lord we pray.
For those who are separated from their families, and those who have no home or family, Lord we pray.
For the victims of drought and famine throughout the world, for the generous sharing of the world’s resources, Lord we pray.
For all who suffer trials and affliction and who need kindness and help, Lord we pray.
Keep all who have found you rooted in your love; may they grow in goodness and truth, Lord we pray.
We remember those who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known only to you. Grant us to enter with them into the life that never ends, Lord we pray.
Grant us, Lord, the joy of praise, in communion with all your saints. Amen. (a prayer from the Taize Community, printed in Praying Together, adapted)

                                      John 1:43-51

Message

Prayer:  O God, teach us to listen for your voice and your word.
Teach me to listen, O God, to those nearest to me, my family, my friends, my coworkers. Help me to be aware that no matter what words I hear, the message is, “Accept the person I am. Listen to me.”

Teach me to listen, my caring God, to those far from me— the whisper of the hopeless, the plea of the forgotten, the cry of the anguished.

Teach me to listen, O God my Mother, to myself. Help me to be less afraid to trust the voice inside— in the deepest part of me.

Teach me to listen, Holy Spirit, for your voice— in busyness and boredom, in certainty and in doubt, in noise and in silence. Teach me, O God, to listen. Amen. (Written by John Veltri and printed in Taste and See edited by Jacquelin Syrup Bergan and S. Marie Schwan)

Hymn       All Poor Ones and Humble VU 68

Message

Prayer:  God of gold, we seek your glory:  the richness that transforms our drabness into colour, and brightens our dullness with vibrant light; your wonder and joy at the heart of all life.

God of incense, we offer you our prayer:  our spoken and unspeakable longings, our questioning of truth, our searching for your mystery deep within.

God of myrrh, we cry out to you in our suffering:  the pain of all our rejections and bereavements, our baffled despair at undeserved suffering, our rage at continuing injustice; and we embrace you, God-with-us, in our wealth, in our yearning, in our anger and loss. Amen. (by Jan Berry, printed in Bread of Tomorrow, edited by Janet Morley)

  A Home-Blessing for Epiphany
L: Blessed be this house.
P:  And all who dwell here.
L:  Three wise ones came to Bethlehem seeking the Christ child, and gave to the child precious gifts:
Gold for the true king, incense for worship, and myrrh for the body which someday would die like our own.
P: In your light, we see light. Thanks be to God.
L:  O God, you led the Wise Ones by the light of a star to show your people’s the way to Jesus Christ. May we who seek Christ trust in you to light the way so we recognize the Christ-light in the epiphanies of the lives with which you bless us.
P:  in your light, we see light. Thanks be to God.
L:  Bless, O God, this household, and grant that all who live here may share the light of love within these walls. May this house be a haven of hope and hospitality, for neighbour and stranger in times of need. And May the light of love cast its beam beyond these doors to bless the world and all of creation.
P: In your light, we see light. Thanks be to God.  Amen. (from Living the Christ Life, by Louise Manganese and Nancy Wyse with Lori Farr)
